The Creative Arts Academy has been designed for students who have a passion for The Arts and want to develop their talents and skills. Our creative environment offers budding drama, dance, music, art and film students an opportunity to pursue their interests alongside other like-minded students.
The Academy enables each student to develop their interests and abilities while exposing them to Arts industry pathways, careers and employment opportunities. The program holds strong values in strengthening each student's ability to work collaboratively, problem-solve, communicate effectively and take initiative.
Students are provided with opportunities to learn, practice and perform in front of live audiences, or display their folio of work through gallery exhibitions and cinema-style film events.
The program is open to students entering Year 7 and provides access to industry-standard equipment, resources and opportunities to excel in their chosen field.
Weekly classes in each Arts discipline allow students to engage in critical thinking, collaboration, teamwork and creative problem-solving while designing, evaluating and presenting work to the wider school community.
A celebration and showcase of The Arts takes place throughout the year at events such as the school musical, Mackay High Presents and Arts Under the Stars. Creative Arts Academy students are expected to actively participate in their chosen Arts discipline, showcasing the skills they have developed throughout the year.
Applications to join the Creative Arts Academy are open to students wishing to participate in the Instrumental Music program. All other Creative Arts Academy pathways are by invitation only in Year 8, with selections based on student engagement, commitment, participation and demonstrated talent within The Arts.
The following extra-curricular programs are offered to Creative Arts Academy students (subject to scheduling and current program availability):
- XL Media
- XL Arts
- Drama Excellence (audition process)
- Vocal Ensemble (audition process)
Additional opportunities available throughout the school year may include:

Students in the Creative Arts Academy are tutored, mentored and coached by our highly qualified and motivated Arts specialty staff team.
It is important that students within the Academy maintain a high academic standard and strong work ethic. Regular reviews of student behaviour, attendance and progress are conducted to support each student's success within the Academy.
Failure to meet Academy expectations may result in an interview with the student and their parents/caregivers to determine their continuation within the program.
