Mackay
State High School has a rich history in exemplary Academic performance. For the benefit of like-ability students the
school offers high achievers the opportunity to apply for a position in the
Academic Excellence Academy.
Students
in the Academic Excellence Academy will participate in the National Curriculum
for core subjects, but will also have the opportunity to extend beyond this
with a range of rich and inspiring tasks and activities designed to challenge
and extend them.
Students
in the Academy in Year 7 exist as an identifiable class and will then
transition into Years 8 and 9 where they will study the core subject areas as
an ongoing part of the Academic Excellence Program.
Academy
students will be invited to participate in a range of extra curricula
activities, excursions, external tests and national competitions.
To
be considered for entry to the Academic Excellence Academy students need to
have demonstrated high levels of performance in Primary School and in external
national testing (NAPLAN). In addition,
students will need to submit a written application and sit for an entrance exam
in Literacy and Numeracy. The
Application process takes place each year in Term 3.
Ongoing
participation in the Academic Excellence Academy is determined through
continued high academic performance and exemplary effort and behaviour. To maintain enrolment in the Academy students
must meet the expectations set out in the Student
Agreement and consistently demonstrate a high commitment to all aspects of
school life. Academy students must
embrace the school’s core values of Respect, Responsibility and
Resilience.
