School Uniform

​​​​Mackay State High School has a set uniform endorsed by the school Parents and Citizens Association.  We have worked hard to ensure that the uniform is functional and affordable. When purchasing uniform items we would like to advise parents that uniform shirts or shorts are only available at the Uniform Shop, located in the school grounds.  Parents may choose to purchase shorts that are plain navy blue and of a suitable style.

Students in Year 7, 8 and 9 must wear the junior secondary uniform shirt, while Year 10, 11 and 12 students wear the senior secondary uniform.

Please check with the school administration if you have any questions or concerns relating to the uniform requirements.

The uniform is to be worn to school daily. Students are not permitted to wear bicycle pants or coloured shorts under their uniform.

General Uniform

  • Junior shirt
    • Year 7 - 9 are to wear the Junior Secondary shirt with the school badge. Students are not permitted to wear t-shirts under the polo shirt.
  •  Senior shirt
    • Year 10 - 12 students are to wear the tri coloured Senior Secondary shirt.  Students are not permitted to wear t-shirts under the polo shirt.
  •  Academy shirt
    • Academies students may wear these shirts as uniform. Key groups have extra-curricula activities shirt. Only students currently enrolled in these activities may wear these shirts as part of the set uniform
  •  Shorts
    • Unisex navy Mackay SHS shorts, plain navy unbranded boxer cut style with elastic top. Girls’ navy tailored style shorts, skorts or culottes or skirt unisex Navy Mackay SHS shorts. Boys navy boxer cut style with elastic top.
  •  Socks
    • White, ankle length socks must be worn. A range of white school socks with school name marked on them are available from the uniform shop. Black socks, football socks, coloured socks and socks that are not visible above the shoe are not acceptable. 
  •  Tracksuit
    • The school tracksuit or a plain navy or maroon tracksuit may be worn with the school uniform during winter. This is not to be worn under the summer uniform. Year 11 & 12 students only may wear the nominated senior jersey. Hooded sweatshirts are not acceptable. 
  •  Hat
    • A full brim hat must be worn for all sporting activities, on the oval and open courts. A school hat is available and students are stongly encouraged to use sun safe practices. 
  • Shoes
    • Shoes must be predominantly white or predominantly black joggers with solid soles (leather or leather like is preferred). High tops, basketball shoes, skate shoes are not acceptable. White shoes must have white laces, black shoes with black laces. Coloured laces are not acceptable.  For safety reasons, students will be refused entry to all workshop, laboratory and kitchen areas if wearing incorrect footwear. 

Formal Uniform

  •  Formal stripe shirt
    • White with vertical maroon and blue stripes, short sleeves, one pocket, normal collar, yoke and two pleats at back. Both Men's and Ladies cuts available. Available at uniform shop. 
  • Navy Shorts/Skirt or Formal trousers (navy/black)
    • Tailored long pants in navy or black are acceptable formal wear.  Jeans and fashionable variations including long leg and brand name clothing and basketball shorts are not acceptable. Skirt: navy with one large box pleat in front and two small pleats either side.  Options also include have the option of wearing either navy culottes, skorts or tailored shorts.  Skirts must be worn at a respectable length, no more than 10cm above the knee. Hemline of shorts to sit above the knee.
  • Socks
    •  Long navy socks with maroon and white bands at the top. Football socks, coloured socks and socks that are not visible above the shoe are not acceptable.
  • Shoes 
    • Black, leather shoes with black shoe laces must be worn. 
  • Tie
    •  Ties are optional, but may be required by some students for official or formal occasions. Ties are to be worn with the formal uniform only.
  • Blazer
    • School blazers are only to be worn with the full dress uniform and may be borrowed from the school for required events or activities

​Arts Performance Uniform

All students in the Vocal Group, String Ensemble, Jazz Band and Concert Band require the following music uniform. As part of the instrumental hire fees a Performance Vest will be supplied at the time of each performance.

  • Black long trousers
    • Black long trousers. Jeans and fashionable variations including long leg and brand name clothing are not acceptable.
  • Maroon shirt
    • This formal arts uniform shirt is purchased from Uniform Shop
  • Black closed in shoes
    • Black, leather shoes with black laces must be worn.
  • Black socks
    • Black, football or coloured socks are not acceptable. Socks that are not visible above the shoe are not acceptable.

Students out of Uniform

  • 1st offence

    • Students not in correct uniform are to report to the Year Level Co-ordinator for a uniform slip.  A uniform breach sees student given a detention (detention record made by YLC or Admin on ID Attend) and student verbally told to attend the withdrawal room. An SMS is to be sent to their parents (via IDAttend) advising of detention.

  • 2nd offence
    •    Possible consequence: Student is issued with a detention by YLC or Admin and referred to relevant HOD of Junior / Senior School – Parent phoned. OneSchool negative behaviour entry made – non-compliance with routine. If student fails to attend the set detention the detention may be converted into an after school detention. Parent is to be notified 24 hours ahead, via phone call. HOD Junior/Senior School to notify parents. Parent is advised of consequence of failure to comply.

  • 3rd offence / continued offence / failure to comply

    •  The student may be suspended

Students out of uniform may be withdrawn from all non-core activities and may be required for lunchtime detentions.

Free Dress/Out of Uniform Days

At various times throughout the year, students participate in free dress or out of uniform days.  On these occasions, students are expected to wear appropriate footwear that meets the Workplace, Health and Safety requirements of the school. 

Thongs, masseurs, reefs, slip-in shoes, scuffs, etc. are not acceptable. Midriff tops, sleeveless tops and singlets are unacceptable.

Jewellery

As long as students are responsible in their use of jewellery, they will be permitted to wear:

  • School badge, senior badge, prefect badge, house captain badge or Interact badge

  • Two (2) sets of plain sleepers or studs per ear

  • Watch

  • One flat signet ring

  • One plain gold or silver chain with an unobtrusive medallion or charm

Students are reminded that for safety reasons, some jewellery, especially rings, may have to be removed in workshop areas.

Other visible body piercing (tongue, eyebrow nose and chin) are only acceptable, if it is a miniature clear stud.

Inappropriate jewellery will be confiscated from students, recorded on OneSchool by a staff member and returned to the student at the end of the term or semester. At the end of each school year uncollected jewellery will be donated to charity.

Make-up and fingernail polish

These are not to be worn at school.  Students will be required to remove it before going to class.
