Lone Pine Tree Planting

Mackay Rotary Club presented MSHS with a Pine tree which has been planted near the Centenary Wall.  These trees come from germination of seeds gained from the Lone Pine plateau near Gallipoli where Private Ben Smith, who had lost his brother in a battle with Turks, three months after the ANZAC landing.  Ben had sent his mother some pine cones from the area, and 13 years later she germinated some seeds and two trees grew, one now in Inverell and the other in Canberra at the Australian War Memorial.  Each year seeds are taken from these trees and distributed to schools.
