High school team cleans up streets

MSHS students and staff clean up.

It was a team effort yesterday as Mackay State High School staff, students and parents gave some of their time to help clean up their part of Australia.

The volunteers spent their morning in the streets surrounding the school.

Principal Steve Paulger said at one point the group spent more than an hour picking up rubbish in the rain.

"We went onto Milton St and Paradise St and the skate park," Mr Paulger said.

"We picked up rubbish in the streets around the school, not necessarily in the school (grounds).

Mr Paulger said the students, in particular, volunteered as much of their time as they could before they had to leave for prior engagements.

"This year, for the first time, I thought we'd nominate an area (around the school)," he said.

Mackay High student Clarie Smith said she had participated in previous Clean Up Australia Day activities.

"I wanted to help out the community today (yesterday)," she said.

"I've cleaned up in the area I live in before too."
